Solar Power Basics

To make the right choices on weather Solar is right for you and how big a system you need to meet you energy demands, it helps to have a basic understanding of how solar power works and the major components of a basic solar power system.

  • The Solar Panels convert sunlight into DC electricity to charge the batteries.

  • The DC electricity is fed to the battery through a Charge Controller. The charge controller ensures proper charging. The quality of the charge controller will dictate the life and performance of the batteries.

  • The Batteries store electrical energy for use when the sun is not shining.  Various battery types are available for use in solar, lead acid batteries, Deep cycle gel batteries and lithium ion batteries. the main differences are cost ,capacity, depth of discharge and life. Batteries can be used to power DC appliances directly.

  • AC appliances require an Inverter to convert  the DC electricity into 240V AC power. Inverters come in two basic output designs, 

    • pure sine wave and

    • modified sine wave (squarewave).​​

Most AC devices will work fine on a modified sinewave inverter, but  some things, like fans, amplifiers, and cheap fluorescent lights, give off an audible buzz on modified sinewave power. 

Pure sine wave inverters provide AC power that is virtually identical to, and often cleaner than, power from the grid.
